Upcoming Changes in HRPP Training System and Requirements - Now Live!

Update!

The changes described in the announcement below are now live!

The Michigan State University Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is excited to announce its transition to the Saba training system as its online training system. Human subject researchers will now access the Saba training system to obtain or view MSU HRPP training records (including existing records) and to complete training requirements. The transition of the HRPP training to the Saba training system is now live!

Benefits of transitioning to the Saba training system include:

  • A centralized location for individuals to access Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA) training records and online modules; the HRPP joins Conflict of Interest and the Animal Care Program in moving training into the Saba training system, with Environmental Health and Safety transitioning in the future.
  • Updated content, with two new courses replacing the MSU IRB Initial Tutorial and eliminating the CITI renewal requirements.

New Training Requirements
Completion of the MSU HRPP/IRB Certification through the Saba training system is now required for PIs and any individuals engaged in human research overseen by MSU. HRPP/IRB Certification can be achieved through the Saba training system by completion of both the “Overview of Human Research Protection at MSU” and “Ethical and Regulatory Considerations” modules, unless alternate training is accepted, such as completion of previous MSU IRB training. For a description of the revised requirements, please visit the Required Training webpage.

Impact of the New Training Requirements
MSU individuals who previously completed MSU IRB training (i.e. MSU IRB Initial Tutorial or CITI Renewal) will:

  • Automatically have the previous MSU IRB training accepted as an alternate to the “Ethical and Regulatory Considerations” module and will only be required to complete the “Overview of Human Research Protection at MSU” module.
  • Maintain the expiration date assigned as part of the previous MSU IRB training completion; individuals will need to complete the MSU HRPP/IRB Certification prior to that expiration date, although it may be completed early.  Individual emails will be sent closer to the expiration date with additional instructions.

Continuing Requirement for HRPP Training
The requirement to complete 6 CITI modules every two years has been eliminated. Instead, Principal Investigators are responsible for ensuring that individuals engaged in their research project maintain relevant and appropriate training, including the protection of human subjects in research. The HRPP will provide targeted human research protection training information to researchers and will also make available a refresher module that summarizes recent HRPP changes.

Training Requirements for New Researchers
Training requirements for individuals who have not previously completed MSU IRB training will depend on the individual’s affiliation with MSU and completion of IRB training through another institution. For a description of the requirements, please visit the Required Training webpage.
