Updated HRPP Manual Sections Related to FERPA and PPRA

Several HRPP Manual sections related to research involving schools or students have been revised. They were revised to incorporate the MSU HRPP Compliance office review process when the study may involve the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), or 34 CFR 356. If a study may involve FERPA, PPRA, or 34 CFR 356, the Compliance will review the study as part of their research compliance review and communicate with the research team as needed about applicable requirements. Clarification was also added that consultation with the MSU Office of the General Counsel may occur when needed.

The following HRPP Manual sections were revised to reflect the new Compliance office process:

• 2-2-D-i, U.S. Department of Education, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
• 2-2-D-ii, U.S. Department of Education, Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment
• 2-2-D-iii, U.S. Department of Education, Funding under 34 CFR 356 for Fellowships Involving Disability and Rehabilitation Research
