Biomedical IRB Chair Changes

After many years of dedicated service, Dr. Ashir Kumar has retired as the Biomedical and Health Institutional Review Board (BIRB) chair. The MSU Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) appreciates the expertise and leadership that Dr. Kumar has provided to the IRB and the HRPP. While he is retiring from the role of BIRB chair, he will continue to serve on the BIRB as an alternate member.

We are pleased to announce Dr. Paul Quinlan as the new BIRB chair. Dr. Paul Quinlan, a graduate of MSU COM (1990), completed his residencies in General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan (1995, 1997). His research training includes a National Institute of Mental Health/National Cancer Institute Medical Student Fellowship (1987), Duke University Human Genetic Analysis Training Program (1995), University of Michigan Research Fellowship (1997) and a MS in Epidemiology at MSU CHM (2007). Research interests include clinical depression and anxiety, suicide risk identification/management and the epidemiology of pediatric depression. Working with the MSU HRPP he served as MSU Chair for National Institutes of Health’s Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research course from 2012 to 2019. Dr. Quinlan has served on the MSU Biomedical IRB since 2009 and as Vice Chair since 2011.
