The review process differs based on the type of review and submission type.
There are three main types of initial review:
Federal regulations define what research activities may qualify for exempt or expedited review. Projects that do not meet the criteria for exempt or expedited are full board.
It is important for investigators to guide the IRB by categorizing their own research project as part of the initial application process. However, if it is determined that the project is not eligible for the category selected, the category will be changed, the investigator will be notified, and the application will be reviewed in the category designated.
