Biomedical and Health Sciences (BIRB)

The Biomedical and Health Institutional Review Board (BIRB) is one of two IRB committees at Michigan State University. Applications reviewed by the BIRB generally encompass medical, biological, and health related research and may be medically invasive. The BIRB is registered to review projects regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Colleges Assigned to BIRB

The BIRB reviews applications based primarily on the Responsible Principal Investigator's College affiliation and whether medical expertise is needed for review. The majority of BIRB applications come from the following MSU Colleges:

  • Engineering
  • Human Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Osteopathic Medicine
  • Veterinary Medicine

Applications from investigators affiliated with other Colleges may also be reviewed by the BIRB if BIRB expertise is needed.
